On Chesil Beach is a 2007 novella by the British writer Ian McEwan. It was selected for the 2007 Booker Prize shortlist . The Washington Post and Pulitzer Prize -winning book critic Jonathan Yardley placed On Chesil Beach on his top ten for 2007, praising McEwan's writing and saying that "even when he's in a minor mode, as he is here, he is nothing short of amazing".

In this short book, Ian McEwan reverses the love story and tells it backwards from their wedding night, allowing those events described to find a climax which might take them into a future with each other or separate them forever.
Chesil Beach extends 18 miles from Portland to West Bay and is perhaps the finest example of a barrier beach anywhere in the world. This phenomenal stretch is part of the Jurassic Coast – a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The beach is famously said to comprise of more than 180 billion pebbles, which gradually reduce in size as you travel along the beach.
