The opening of "Uncle Meat" is one of a series of examples in this study where Zappa creates harmonic fields by freely mixing as good as all notes of a scale. There's a D pedal note, determining the scale to be D, with the Dsus4 chord played over it in staff 2.

A two hour extravaganza (if you listen to the expanded CD version, which you should) from Frank Zappa and The Mothers of Invention, even half of an album from the same crew can be difficult to put into words.
