Soft Machine are a British rock band from Canterbury formed in mid-1966 by Mike Ratledge, Robert Wyatt, Kevin Ayers, Daevid Allen and Larry Nowlin. As a central band of the Canterbury scene, the group became one of the first British psychedelic acts and later moved into progressive and jazz rock, becoming a purely instrumental band in 1971. [2]

Soft Machine löste sich offiziell niemals auf, die Aktivitäten wurden aber immer sporadischer. 1978 erschien Alive and Well, das aus Konzerten mit demselben Titel entstand, doch nach der reinen Studioaufnahme Land of Cockayne (1981), die trotz prominenter Beteiligung (Jack Bruce am Bass) weder bei der Kritik noch beim Publikum Anklang fand, stellte Soft Machine den Betrieb endgültig ein.
