Giant Songs draws pretty evenly from the first four Giant Sand discs, adding three tracks from Blacky Ranchette’s Heartland. The Giant Sandwich CD is a particularly good choice, as it nearly doubles the LP’s number of what Gelb’s notes call “shy” (read: hard to find) songs and steps rather confidently forward with some previously unheard material, like the very early “Artists.”

Giant Sand's trademark sound fell into place with 1988's The Love Songs, while 1995's Glum and 2000's Chore of Enchantment captured Gelb and company at the peak of their abilities. While Gelb retired Giant Sand in 2016, he brought the concept back in 2018 with the album Returns to Valley of Rain.

If I’d started when I was 24 at least, it would have been a lot healthier, it would have made all the difference.
