The Badlands provide some of the most mysterious sights to see in the national park system, from fossil beds to spired rocks formations. Located on the edge of our country’s Great Plains in southwestern South Dakota, Badlands National Park consists of 244,000 acres of sharply eroded buttes, pinnacles and spires blended with the largest, protected mixed-grass prairie in the United States.
Badlands biomes feature large mounds of terracotta bands, in layers of various colors; specifically, red, orange, yellow, white, light gray, brown, and regular terracotta may all naturally generate. At high altitudes, the topmost layer of stained terracotta is often weathered into regular terracotta, most often on plateau tops.
Badlands National Park. Badlands National Park is located in the northern United States in the southwestern corner of the state of South Dakota. The national park boundaries encompass an area of 379.3 square miles (982.4 sq km). The Badlands Wilderness is a further designation of an area with the national park.

Badlands National Park, steeped in Native American (specifically, Lakota) and French explorer lore, was founded in 1929. When it was originally proposed to the South Dakota Legislature in 1909, the petition for creating the park said in part, “nature has carved the surface of the earth into the most unique and interesting forms, and has exposed to an extent perhaps not elsewhere found …”
