Názov pochádza zo staroturkického slova „kazák“ („slobodný“), ktoré odrážalo nomádsky spôsob života obyvateľstva. Prvok názvu „-stan“ znamená „krajina, miesto, región“, má iránsky pôvod a je rozšírený na východe, preto možno názov „Kazachstan“ doslovne preložiť ako „krajina slobodných ľudí“. [6]
