In these uses, the Cross represented a connection with the northern hemisphere, not a difference from it. “This connection is most clearly shown in the University of Sydney’s motto – ‘the same mind under a different sky’.
I have an iron on patch on the Australian flag from years ago and figured “I love Australia and I already have the patch, I’ll just cover the logo with the patch.” When my wife, originally from Thailand, saw what I was doing she told me I shouldn’t because most people displaying the Australian flag are racist.
