La Hornet è stata prodotta in due generazioni. Dal 1951 al 1954 è stata realizzata dalla Hudson, mentre dal 1955 al 1957 venne assemblata, con un design completamente differente, dalla AMC. La prima serie era costruita su un telaio caratterizzato da un baricentro basso che migliorava la guidabilità della vettura, soprattutto nella competizioni.
