Sentenced, 1988 yılında Deformity adıyla kuruldu fakat grup elemanlarının birçoğunun değişmesinin ardından 1989'da grubun adı da Sentenced olarak değişti. O zamanki kadroda Miika Tenkula (gitar&vokal), Sami Lopakka (gitar), Vesa Ranta (davul) ve Lari Kylmänen (bas gitar) yer alıyordu. Bu kadroyla 1990 ve 1991'de iki demo kaydettiler.
