I read in other threads here that some members said that "mother language" would be used in certain contexts, but they didn't get into what those contexts would be. I can't think of a single context where people would say "mother language", except when they are non-native English speakers.

The first language is the language that a child learns to speak first in life. Therefore, depending on exposure, the mother tongue and the first language may or may not be the same.

Sometimes the term mother tongue or mother language is used for the language that a person learnt as a child at home (usually from their parents). Children growing up in bilingual homes can, according to this definition, have more than one mother tongue or native language. Seems to me that you have the right choice of words.
