The current flag was adopted on July 13, 2004, following Montenegro's push for independence from the State Union of Serbia and Montenegro. This flag design, however, harks back to the royal standards of the Kingdom of Montenegro (1910-1918), with the double-headed eagle being a traditional symbol of the Montenegrin Petrović-Njegoš dynasty.
The current design of the Montenegro national flag was officially adopted on July 13, 2004, following the country’s independence from the State Union of Serbia and Montenegro. However, the use of the double-headed eagle as a symbol dates back to the medieval era.
