No se tienen registros claros de quién fue su madre. Después de varios años de estudio en el Kilkenny College asistió al Trinity College en Dublín, a los 15 años.
Miles Joseph Berkeley (Biggin Hall, Benefield, Northamptonshire, 1 d'abril de 1803 – 30 de juliol de 1889) va ser un científic i clergue britànic, un dels fundadors de la moderna ciència de la fitopatologia. Berkeley va rebre educació al Rugby School i el Christ's College, Cambridge.

BERKELEY, MILES JOSEPH (1803–1889), botanist, born at Biggin, near Oundle, Northamptonshire, on 1 April 1803, was the son of Charles Berkeley of Biggin. From Oundle grammar school he went to Rugby in 1817, and thence in 1821 as a scholar to Christ's College, Cambridge, where he graduated B.A. in 1825, proceeding M.A. in 1828.
BERKELEY, MILES JOSEPH (1803–1889), English botanist, was born on the 1st of April 1803, at Biggin Hall, Northamptonshire, and educated at Rugby and Christ’s College, Cambridge, of which he became an honorary fellow. Taking holy orders, he became incumbent of Apethorpe in 1837, and vicar of Sibbertoft, near Market Harborough, in 1868.
