Martin Luther King s-a născut pe 15 ianuarie 1929, ca fiu al reverendului Martin Luther King Sr. (născut la Stock-Bruge, în Georgia, pe 19 decembrie 1897. A adoptat numele Luther după o excursie prin Europa și Țara Sfântă, în 1934. A murit în Atlanta, Georgia, în 1984.
