Thomas E. Dewey. Thomas E. Dewey was born and grew up in Owosso, but he is best known for investigating organized crime in New York and serving as governor of New York. When he lost the presidential race in 1944, the Chicago Daily Tribune's headline, "Dewey Defeats Truman" gave him a place in American political folklore.
