James Last ble enkemann i 1997 da hans kone, Waltraud, døde etter lang tids kamp mot kreft. Han giftet seg igjen i 1999 med den tretti år yngre Christine Grundner fra München. Last bosatte seg i Miami i Florida, men oppholdt seg også en god del i Hamburg. Han fikk to barn, datteren Catharina og sønnen Ron.
