Un gong romà trobat entre 1877 i 1882 al condat de Wiltshire, al sud-est d'Anglaterra està datat del segle I o II d.C. [6] Es gongs xinesos més antics daten de l'època precristiana. Jaap Art (1956) creu que el gong és hel·lenístic (des del segle IV a.C.), des de la regió del Mediterrani oriental fins a la Xina.

Gong je utemeljen 1997. godine kao inicijativa "Građani organizirano nadgledaju glasanje", no to je ime promijenio, izmjenama Statuta 2000. godine, u jednostavno GONG. S obzirom na to da je korištenje velikih tiskanih slova godinama izazivalo dojam da se i dalje radi o skraćenici, Gong je na Skupštini krajem 2018. odlučio dalje koristiti samo mala tiskana slova u imenu.
