Nearly a hundred years after its original publication, The Railway Children is still one of E. Nesbit's most beloved and delightful stories. 'The Three Chimneys' lies beside a railway track - a constant source of enjoyment to all three. They make friends with the Station Master and Perks the Porter, as well as the jovial 'Old Gentleman' who waves to them everyday from the train.
The Railway Children is dedicated to her eldest son, “behind whose knowledge of railways [Nesbit’s] ignorance confidently shelters.” She died in 1924 of suspected lung cancer. The Railway Children is perhaps Nesbit’s best-known work and has been adapted several times for radio, television, and film.
Charles Waterbury, the patriarch, works at the Foreign Office. The day after Christmas, he is arrested on suspicion of being a spy. This is hidden from the rest of the family by his wife. The family become impoverished and are forced to move to a house called Three Chimneys in Yorkshire, which is near Oakworth railway station.
