After playing in punk bands, and in Rhys Chatham's guitar orchestra ensemble, Robert Poss formed the noise-rock group Band of Susans in 1986. The group took its name from the fact that it originally contained three members named Susan. Numerous lineup shifts occurred over the course of the group's career, with Poss and Susan Stenger remaining the only constant members.
