Oysterband's roots in the U.K. folk scene extend back to the mid-'70s. Bandmembers emerged from both the Whitstable Oyster Co. Ceilidh Band, which formed in 1975, and Fiddler's Dram, a group put together in 1973 by Dave Arbus, whose fiddle work has graced releases by East of Eden and the Who.

Oysterband har udgivet 22 studie- og 5 livealbums samt et opsamlingsalbum. Hertil kommer over hundrede bidrag til kompilationer med andre kunstnere. Besætningen har naturligvis skiftet i bandets snart 40 års levetid. Seneste ændring er, at Chopper (Ray Cooper) er gået solo efter 25 år med bandet. Han efterfølges af Al Scott.
