Martin Goodman was the publisher in charge of Timely Comics in the 1940s, which at the time was popular for its books based on real life super-heroes the Human Torch, Sub-Mariner and Captain America.. After America's entry into World War II in late 1941, Timely comics began publishing stories of other wartime heroes who had been drafted into the Crazy S.U.E.S. unit.

Martin Goodman was born in 1908 and started his career in pulp magazines. Goodman paired up with Louis Silberkleit and founded the Western Fiction Publishing around1932. Goodman and Silberkleit busted out pulps here and there. Once a popular topic arose in the public, Goodman and his partner took that idea and turned it into a pulp.

Martin Goodman is Professor of Jewish Studies at Oxford and President of the Oxford Centre for Jewish and Hebrew Studies. He is a Fellow of Wolfson College, Oxford and the British Academy. His Rome and Jerusalem, published in 2008, was acknowledged as a landmark in the study of the Jewish people in the Roman Empire, and has been translated into six languages.
