Llewellyn was born in Crickhowell, Brecknockshire, the younger son of Sir Harry Llewellyn, 3rd Bt. (d. 1999), an Olympic gold medallist in show jumping, and his wife, the Hon. Christine Saumarez (d. 1998). He was educated at Shrewsbury School and then received a National Certificate in Horticulture at Merrist Wood College.
Harry Llewellyn and Foxhunter became as much of a double-act as ham and eggs or fish and chips. They helped the British show jumping team strike gold in the 1952 Olympic Games in the final round in Helsinki with a clear round that was in stark contrast to their earlier effort, in which they picked up 16.5 faults.
