In late 1996, Willis married fellow Austin musician and songwriter Bruce Robison. As the '90s drew to a close, Willis inked a deal with the respected indie label Rykodisc. Her fourth album, What I Deserve, appeared in 1999 and it was a creative and commercial breakthrough for Willis.

Appropriately named Wonder Women of Country, the supergroup was formed at the end of 2021, after serendipitously sharing bills separately several times.
