Mikey Dread had al tijdens zijn jeugd een eigen radiozender. Na zijn schooltijd ging hij werken bij de Jamaicaanse zender JBC uit Kingston, waar hij in de nachtelijke uren het programma Dread At The Controls maakte met uitsluitend Jamaicaanse muziek. Ondanks de populariteit van het programma ontstond er een conflict tussen Campbell en de leiding van JBC en stopte hij in 1979.

20 de ene. de 2011 · Mikey Dread recorded his first single “Barber Saloon.” “Barber Saloon” charted at #1 on the local Jamaican Radio Charts. He recorded several Top 10-reggae singles in 1978 and produced his first albums “ Dread at the Controls” (Trojan Records-London) and “African Anthem” (A Special Edition from Jamaica’s radio program for Cruise Records-UK).
Before the year was out, Dread had launched his own label, Dread at the Controls, which was also chosen as the title of his debut album and DATC's first release. Its dub companion, African Anthem Dubwise, followed and featured dub remixes by King Tubby, Prince Jammy, and Dread himself. Both albums featured excursions into deep dub and were cut up by jingles, spoken word segments, and toasts ...
