Back to the Story is a double-disc set that includes the complete recorded works of The Idle Race. Later issues omit the single It's Only the Dog / Your Friend released in 1966 as The Nightriders. In their day, The Idle Race weren’t the most celebrated groups of the mid-60’s psychedelic period.

Despite receiving positive reviews, The Idle Race failed to achieve significant commercial success, and the band disbanded in 1970 after releasing their third album, "Time Is." However, Jeff Lynne's talent was recognized, and he went on to form ELO, which became one of the most successful bands of the 1970s and 1980s, known for their unique blend of rock and orchestral music.
