Todd's "Pop Song Reviews" long ago stopped actually being about just reviewing a song and primarily became about analyzing the artist themselves and the space they occupy in the music scene. For instance, this review was like 10% about the song and 90% about the people who recorded it and their contemporaries.
Todd was taking pop music seriously for way longer than even outlets like Pitchfork. Not sure I fully agree. Pitchfork called Justin Timberlake's My Love the best song of 2006, ahead of their usual favorites like The Knife, TV on the Radio, Hot Chip, Beach House, Joanna Newsom, etc.
