The book, Waiting for the Rain, by Sheila Gordon, gives a good perspective on how the blacks were treated in Africa. The protagonist is a black boy, named Tengo, who lives on a farm with his parents under the owner Oom Koos. Tengo becomes friends with Oom Koo's nephew Frikkie.
