The opening track on their debut album Exploring The Axis is ‘Down In The Desert’, a cautionary tale of a man walking out on his hometown and going south, only to return "very quietly", the insistent chorus warning that "something affected him down in the desert".

[1] [2] Composed whilst on tour in Europe, the album was noted for its "visceral" instrumental performances, Guy Kyser's gravelly vocals and his personal, abstract lyricism.
While Thin White Rope's 1985 debut 'Exploring the Axis' flirted with neo-psychedelia, the 1987 follow-up 'Moonhead' upped the ante by allowing the desperation of Kyser's lyrics to take full command of the music.Unrelentingly grim and harrowingly provocative, the album's best songs -like "Crawl Piss Freeze" and "If Those Tears"- were postcards from the edge.
