De serie is gebaseerd op personages uit de boeken van Grace Metalious.De serie volgde na de productie van twee relatief succesvolle bioscoopfilms die ook (en meer getrouw) op deze boeken waren gebaseerd: Peyton Place en Return to Peyton Place.
