A self-taught musician, he grew up practicing on his family piano from the age of seven. By his early teens, he was playing bass, organ, and guitar as well besides the piano. Initially inspired by the skiffle craze, Price kicked off his career in the early 1960s with the formation of the group ‘The Alan Price Rhythm and Blues Combo.’

A big hit in their native North-East, their rowdy live shows at venues like the Downbeat and Club A’Gogo became the stuff of local lore. Soon they were supporting John Lee Hooker and Sonny Boy Williamson.
