In 1988, Giant Sand issued a pair of new LPs, the equally diffuse 'Storm' and 'The Love Songs'. By 1989's raw, improvisational ' Long Stem Rant ', the group consisted only of Gelb and drummer John Convertino , while 1990's ' Swerve ' featured guests like Juliana Hatfield and Poi Dog Pondering .

This is Giant Sand's very best work (only rivaled by the sublime Chore Of Enchantment) and a hard album to find (it took me a year of searching to locate a copy). The Love Songs makes me think that if they'd joined forces with Green On Red, they would have been Gods of alt.country.Grit and savage swing with too much musical texture to take in all in one listening.
