Sade originally released The Sweetest Taboo written by Sade Adu and Martin Ditcham and Sade released it on the album Promise in 1985. It was also covered by Midnite String Quartet, Wayne Raglan, Sunaga t Experience feat. ナガシマトモコ, The Smooth Jazz All Stars and other artists.

Martin Ditcham’s hypnotic drumming grounds the piece while Andy Panayi on flute and clarinet and Robbie McIntosh on dobro delicately decorate the chords. All three are Hollis collaborators. Mark Hollis’ close friend Laurence Pendrous brings a harmonium drone and Ben Taylor masterfully accompanies on double bass.
It was released in October 1985 as the album's lead single. While the song peaked at number 31 on the UK Singles Chart, it fared considerably better in the United States, where it reached number five on the Billboard Hot 100 in March 1986, remaining in the top 40 for 13 weeks.
Martin Ditcham is a percussionist who worked - among many others - with Sade and Hooverphonic. The British percussionist has made a career out of playing and performing with artist Chris Rea (who's worked Ian Stewart, and Rolling Stone members Charlie and Bill on their solo projects).
