I only vaguely knew Johnny Hartman from the album he did with John Coltrane so when I watched The Bridges Of Madison County [1995] [DVD] I was kind of surprised that when my wife asked me, "Who is that singing on the radio?"(in the movie) I said "Johnny Hartman" without hesitation.

The lush baritone voice of Johnny Hartman enriched many big bands in the Forties and Fifties including Dizzy Gillespie's and Erol Garner's. But in the sixties he recorded many fine albums as leader and with all-star small groups.
The Voice That Is! consists of two sessions with different lineups. On one ( #1 - 5) Hartman was accompanied by a quartet consisting of Hank Jones, piano, Richard Davis, bass, Osie Johnson, drums, and Barry Galbraith, guitar. Barry Galbraith in particular stands out for his sensitive playing, which is ideally suited to Hartman's velvety voice.
