24 de may. de 2015 · On his 1987 album Gematria, Peter Himmelman drew inspiration from a familiar New Jersey sight. “Waning moon hovering the Meadowlands, I’ve been waning, too,” he sang in his moody rock song, “Waning Moon.” In the song, the moon becomes more than a symbol of his state of mind; it practically becomes a character.

Gematria, recorded in just three days, is an uplifting explosion of joyful ensemble playing that shows how tight and sympathetic these guys are. Himmelman’s lower- case lyrics are fairly meaningless (and worse, pretentious in spots) but his music has spirit, power and clarity that far outweigh such concerns.

I first heard Peter Himmelman back in ’87 with an incredible album called Gematria; it’s now 30 years later and he still can amaze you with a coupling of words or turn of a phrase. His is a very warm, yet very focused literary style of songwriting; his lyrics are very often melodic novels.
