Jem had no preconceived notions for Down To Earth, save for a decision to limit the ballads to a few choice specimens (“You Will Make It,” written with her brother Justin – aka the artist Glass Pear – who collaborates on three songs on the album, is a song about loss and 9/11, featuring the soaring vocals of Vusi Mahlasela).
Their collaborative tracks generated a stir, and Jem was signed to ATO Records, which released the EP IT ALL STARTS HERE in 2003. Her debut full-length DOWN TO EARTH appeared in 2008. Jem’s songs have appeared in numerous television shows, including the O.C. and SIX FEET UNDER, and on the SEX IN THE CITY movie soundtrack.
