Silverthorn is a semestered school, meaning we run 4 classes for half the year (Sept –Jan) and 4 classes for the second half of the year (Feb –June). The school day starts at 8:50 AM and finishes at 3:10 PM with the exception of Wednesday’s when we have a late start from 9:50-3:10 PM.

When Markland Wood was developed in the early 1960s, the Etobicoke Board of Education decided to build a secondary school for the area. The school was to be named Silverthorn Collegiate Institute after the family who had first settled the area.
The main purpose of assessment and evaluation is to improve student learning. For students to be successful in any course, they should: keep absences to a minimum, actively participate in class and ask questions. review each day’s work before the next class, meet deadlines. discuss questions and concerns with their teachers.
