Berline, who was born on July 6, 1944, in Caldwell, Kansas, eventually moved to Guthrie and made central Oklahoma his home. Berline helped establish the annual Oklahoma International Bluegrass Festival. He died from complications from a recent stroke.

A young Vince Gill later joined the band on mandolin. The album Live at McCabes was released in 1978. In 1979 Berline had a small role as a country musician in the film The Rose.
