William Close experimented with various substances to make indelible inks, both black and red. Because the inks available in his day did not produce a permanent written text the 'testimony of writing', as he described it, could be lost, erased or defaced by exposure to humidity, or fading, or particularly by the deliberate use of 'oxigenated muriatic acids' [hypochlorite bleach].
