Karamu House, Inc. located in Cleveland, Ohio, was established in 1915, and is a premier African American performing arts and community educational center. Its mission is to strengthen community through theater performances and arts education programming with an emphasis on African American history and culture.
The Karamu House is known as the oldest black theater company in the U.S. and has been an incubator for some of the most well-known black artists since its opening in 1917. One of the most notable artists to cross paths with this Cleveland theater was playwright and poet Langston Hughes, who saw a number of his own plays debut on stage.
