24 de nov. de 2016 · What I think you are saying, and I agree with you, is that the three-dot ellipsis, when it is accepted as valid, is a piece of punctuation in its own right and not a row of three dots.

Yes, you do put a space in front of three of them, but not in front of four of them. The open questions are whether to use three or four, and whether to put spaces not just fore or aft, but between them.

I'm far from convinced there's any justification for that Wikipedia claim about this usage being more common amongst younger, Internet-savvy generations, except in the sense that many young people today probably actually write more often than earlier generations anyway, because they "chat" using text on social network sites, and post on forums.

Bringhurst says: “In English (but usually not in French), when the ellipsis occurs at the end of a sentence, a fourth dot, the period, is added and the space at the beginning of the ellipsis disappears. . . .
