I agree with u/TenderPaw64 on the pacing of their relationship relative to the movies: the first movie has brought Nick and Judy from distrust, through hardship and danger, to a close and healthy friendship based on mutual trust and respect. The second movie should (IMO of course 🤓) show the evolution of that friendship into a romantic partnership between two best friends.
