His elder brother, Pierre, became a distinguished theatre and cinema actor, the screen’s first Maigret in Jean’s adaptation of La Nuit du carrefour (1932). He also appeared for his brother as Charles Bovary, and as Louis XVI in La Marseillaise (1938).
