The best ones blur that binary delineation, and while “Concrete Cowboy” isn’t exactly a Western, it’s comfortable cribbing some of the contents of the genre. De scènes waarin Cole vriendschap sluit met een jonge drugsdealer zijn aan de clichématige kant. Maar de band die zich ontwikkelt tussen de dwarse tiener en diens stugge vader is prachtig, en als portret van een onbekende – en steeds meer bedreigde – subcultuur is de film een aangename verrassing.

Director Ricky Staub did his part by delivering us such a marvelous film, and we should do our part of the job by watching it and keeping the Cowboy heritage alive.
