While R134a Refrigerant is more environmentally friendly than its predecessors, ongoing research and regulations aim to phase out HFCs, including R134a, in favor of even more eco-friendly alternatives. Some options, like R1234yf, are already being adopted in certain applications, while other new refrigerants are under development.
In 2015 the second version came into force, introducing the phase down of high GWP hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) refrigerants. In October 2023 the third version was finally agreed. The latter is an extremely ambitious regulation with a long-term full phase out of F-gases.
