El Dr. Timothy Darrow era un ornitólogo, alguien que estudia las aves como profesión. En 1977, decidió realizar una expedición con su mejor amigo, que también era ornitólogo, y otro amigo indonesio que conocía la selva de Flores, Indonesia. Su objetivo era documentar y filmar un búho nativo del bosque que quizás se extinguió hace años.
