I think the reason everyone liked it so much is because it's a good story about a ship no-one could control but she takes the ship, starting off as a rookie and takes the battlefield by storm. I guess people like it cause it's heartwarming and more emotional than some of the episodes. Edit: plus, cool guns and sci-fi fighting.
