Opvækst. Smulders blev født i Vancouver, British Columbia i Canda som datter af en hollandsk far, som var tandlæge, og en britisk mor, der arbejde med fundraisers. Hun voksede op i White Rock, British Columbia og familien flyttede senere til det velhavende West Point Grey -kvarter og gik på high school på Lord Byng Secondary School.

"Probably when I wake up in the morning and start my day," she explained. "I mean, I never wear makeup in my life, truly I don't."
