Roger Fry is better known for his writing about art and for the exhibitions he organised, but he saw himself first and foremost as a painter. In 1891 he visited Italy to see the great art of the past. Through studying the old masters he learnt the importance of the structure of a composition (the arrangement of things within a painting).
