In 1916 Grant and Garnett moved with Vanessa Bell and her children to Charleston Farmhouse in Sussex, where they also found work on the land during the war. Charleston was to remain Duncan and Vanessa's country house for the rest of their lives, and a welcome retreat from London. Well it's very nice after all this sordid town life to be here again.

Duncan Grant en Vanessa Bell bleven niettemin samen tot haar dood in 1961. Ze woonden o.a. in het Charleston Farmhouse, waarin sinds 1986 een museum is gevestigd dat gewijd is aan de beeldende aspecten van de Bloomsburygroep. Ze kregen samen een kind, Angelica, in 1918. Vanessa Bell en Duncan Grant hebben ook veel samengewerkt in schilderprojecten.
