Ellsworth Maurice Kelly was born in Newburgh, New York, on May 31, 1923. He spent most of his childhood in New Jersey. Encouraged by his teachers, Kelly started experimenting with painting and sculpture in elementary school. He was listed as “best artist” in his junior high school yearbook. 2.

Ellsworth Kelly’s work does not fit neatly into an art historical category or movement. His particular approach to artmaking involved “finding” flat objects or shapes in the world that captured his attention and lifting them out of reality with abstract creations.

Kelly's concern with color as form was thus established. After returning to the United States in 1954, Kelly worked with large single biomorphic shapes in black and white. Primary colors reappeared in his paintings after 1957, either in double or triple variations or singly in contrast with white, as in Blue on White [SAAM, 1969.47.63].
