Olga Khokhlova, a dancer in Sergei Diaghilev’s company Ballets Russes, became Picasso’s principal model soon after they met in 1917. To prepare this portrait of his future wife, he created several drawings; he also worked from a photograph showing Olga in the same dress and pose, one reminiscent of Ingres’s Neoclassical paintings.

Olga Picasso (born Olga Stepanovna Khokhlova; Russian: Ольга Степановна Хохлова; Ukrainian: Ольга Степанівна Хохлова; 17 June 1891 – 11 February 1955) was a ballet dancer in the Russian ballet. She was also the first wife of Pablo Picasso, one of his early artistic muses and the mother of his son, Paulo.
Olga Khokhlova apprend la relation de son mari en 1935 et décide de partir dans le sud de la France avec leur fils Paul et de demander le divorce. Pour des raisons autant de partage des biens que de convenances, Picasso refuse le divorce et, bien que ne vivant plus ensemble depuis des décennies, ils resteront officiellement mariés jusqu'à la mort d'Olga Khokhlova en 1955.
